There are many sources from where you can download and use free pictures on your blog but the most loved site is Flickr. Though you can not use any picture available on Flickr. To use Flickr images on blog you must understand the Flickr licensing system first.

Copyrighted vs Creative Commons Licensed

Flickr gives uploaders to mark their pictures as copyrighted or licensed under Creative Commons. You can not use copyrighted pictures any way. You have only option to choose from creative commons licensed pictures but not all pictures under CC will suit your needs. There are 6 types of creative commons licensed pictures in Flickr. You should choose images under these licenses according to your need.

To understand these licenses deeply you need to understand first the basic creative commons license marks.

  2. No Derivative Works: You can copy, share and use picture but can not modify or adopt in other works.
  3. Noncommercial: You can copy, share and edit picture but can not use it commercially.
  4. Share Alike: You can copy, share, edit and use picture but if you distribute it, you must assign the same or similar license to the result work.

Creative Commons Licenses to Use Flickr Images on Blog

1. Attribution License

The Attribution License is the most useful license for a blogger. This license gives freedom to use, share and edit pictures even commercially. The only thing you need to use pictures under this license is give attribution to the author.

2. Attribution-NoDerivs License

The Attribution-NoDerivs License is more restricted than Attribution License. You can use or share picture commercially under this license as far as you give attribution to the author but you can not edit the picture or can not mix the picture with another work.

3. Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs License

The name of this license describes its nature. The Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs License is more restricted than the Attribution-NoDerivs License and any picture under this license can not be used commercially. So, either your blog is noncommercial you can not use pictures under this license. This license also does not give freedom to edit pictures. So, you can use pictures under this license without editing on your noncommercial blog only as far as you give attribution to the author.

4. Attribution-NonCommercial License

You can use, share and modify pictures under Attribution-NonCommercial License non commercially as far as you give attribution to the author. You can not use pictures under this license if your blog is commercial.

5. Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License

You can use, share and edit pictures non commercially under Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License by giving attribution to the author. If you edit or include picture under this license with another work then you must assign the same license for the result work if you want to re-distribute it.

6. Attribution-ShareAlike License

Attribution-ShareAlike License gives you freedom to use, share and edit pictures by giving attribution to the author. You can use pictures under this license even commercially. You’re free to edit and distribute the result work under similar license.

So, pictures under Attribution License, Attribution-NoDerivs License and Attribution-ShareAlike License are helpful for commercial bloggers. There are hundreds of thousands of photos available under these licenses in Flickr, just choose the right one for your blog post.
